Lahaina Real Estate Blog: What are we REALLY selling?

What are we REALLY selling?

In an attempt to define the purpose of my business, I foudn my self having to deal with the bigger question:  What am I selling? Sure, the short answer is HOUSES. And most of us, when we think of houses we think location, square footage, condition of the property, market value.

But are we really selling just square footage of living space, which truly  is square feet of area under the roof? Are we selling a pile of construction materials arranged in a seamingly logical and hopefully artful or functional manner? Are we selling numbers attached to this big ticket item, validated by an appraisal, and thus by more numbers?

The most beautiful and extensive definition of a HOME I found is in the beginning of Lori Ryker's book called " Off the Grid Homes, Case Studies for Sustainable Living". Please take a minute to slowly read every word of this:

"Homes are expressions of collected day-to-day experiences. They provide a place of refuge and memory making. From within our dwellings, our lives unfold and are invented, while personal beliefs are explored and expressed. Rituals are created and reenacted daily, weekly, or monthly, responding to our interpretations of how to live in the world. Holidays are given their context from within our homes, entwining our sense of an event within a particular place. Homes have the ability to express and embody an understanding of ourselves and our relationship to the world around us. They express who we are, who we want to be, and how we will be remembered."

I was so impressed with this definition, that I had to post it on my website, at

Enjoy your weekend, at HOME!

Mihaela, thanks.  I always thought of it as selling the dream; of what might to come.  Great reminder it's not just about the brick & mortar, the slab, the roof, etc.

Promotion of a product... that is what all salesman peddle. But we have a community around this fix based product. And not just houses, but land, waterfront vacation retreats, small mom and pop business listings. So instead of trying to convince someone, to sell someone a property, think of a salesman knows the product. Tons of creative, interesting images. Boatloads of copy information about the property with helpful time saving links. And videos to show and tell. That is what today's salesman stream savvy. Not doing things the old black and white Polaroid photo days of one image, a line or two of copy and only local buyers as a rule.

Hi Mihaela - I prefer to think that our medium is housing - and the definition you've provided is an excellent one. But what we're ultimately selling is ourselves - our expertise and customer service, our knowledge and experience. Helps me separate what we do from the used car guys.

Hi Mihaela~ That is a beautiful description of home.

I agree with Dick, that we are selling ourselves, and the value that we bring to someones home buying experience.

There are many levels of expertise we are promoting. Our area and contract knowledge, our capability to present facts and research to help buyers make educated decisions, our integrity and communication skills, the ability to negotiate on our clients behalf, all are the value we bring.

Hi Mihaela--I have to agree with you that is the most beautiful definition of Home I have ever read.  The house, the physical structure is what we get ready to market and what gets sold.  Home is what starts from that point with the creation of memories.  Nice post.
